Neonatal jaundice describes a condition in which an infant’s skin appears yellow within the first few days of life. The yellowish appearance is a sign of an increased blood pigment called Bilirubin, which then settles in the skin. In many cases this is a normal process and occurs in about two third of all healthy newborns. However, it may at times be a sign of a problem with the baby’s feeding, level of hydration or red blood cells lifespan. Other rare causes such as metabolism disorders, gland malfunction or liver disease can also present with jaundice. Only the health care provider can determine if the infant’s jaundice is normal and may order a blood test to help with diagnosis. Dr. Vikram Singh, a leading Neonatologist and Pediatrician in Delhi, NCR, is monitoring high risk births and is known to provide best care to newborns. Phototherapy is a treatment that allows the Bilirubin under the skin to be broken down by a special light that illuminates the baby’s body. These lights are usually blue green. They are placed about 4 inches above the baby. The more skin that is exposed to the lights, the better they work to break down a larger amount of unconjugated or indirect Bilirubin. The lights do not prevent the baby from drinking formula or being breastfed. The baby can be safely removed from the phototherapy at feeding times without decreasing the efficacy of the treatment. There are generally no significant risks with phototherapy. The eyes of the baby will have shields to prevent the light from harming the baby’s eyes and retina. There are no risks to the genitals of the baby. The physicians will then arrange for blood tests to be done regularly to ensure that the treatment is working. Immunization not only save your child’s life but also save future generations. Vaccines have reduced and, in some cases, eliminated many diseases that killed or severely disabled people just a few generations ago. For example, smallpox vaccination eradicated that disease worldwide. By vaccinating children against rubella or German measles, the risk that pregnant women will pass this virus on to their fetus or newborn has been dramatically decreased, and birth defects associated with that virus no longer are seen. If we continue vaccinating now, and vaccinating completely, parents in the future may be able to trust that some diseases of today will no longer be around to harm their children in the future. Also, because of advances in medical science, your child now can be protected against more diseases than ever before. Polio is one example of the great impact that vaccines have had, Polio was once most-feared disease, causing death and paralysis across, but today, thanks to vaccination, there are no reports of polio recently. Dr. Vikram Singh, provides all the necessary vaccines from newborn to adolescence. Consult him for overall healthy growth of your child, online or in clinic by booking online appointment at icareheal website, or download app on your smartphones.
Colic is when a healthy baby cries for a very long time, for no obvious reason. It is most common during the first 6 weeks of life. It usually goes away on its own by age 3 to 4 months. Up to 1 in 4 newborn babies may have it. Colic is defined as when a baby’s crying, lasts for more than 3 hours a day, happens more than 3 days a week, occurs for more than 3 weeks. Colic often begins suddenly, with loud and mostly non stop crying. This constant, extreme crying can be very stressful and difficult for parents. Babies with colic are often fussy, gassy, and don't sleep well. But in most cases they grow and gain weight normally. Colic will go away on its own. Breastfed and Formula fed infants have slightly different growth patterns during the first year, Breastfed infants grow more quickly in the first three to four months, and more slowly from five months on compared to Formula fed infants. When recording your baby’s weight, make sure it’s being plotted on a chart based on breastfeeding babies. Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) is a blood problem in newborn babies. It occurs when your baby's red blood cells break down at a fast rate. It’s also called erythroblastosis fetalis. All people have a blood type (A, B, AB, or O). Everyone also has an Rh factor, positive or negative. There can be a problem if a mother and baby have a different blood type and Rh factor. HDN happens most often when an Rh negative mother has a baby with an Rh positive father. If the baby's Rh factor is positive, like their father's, this can be an issue if the baby's red blood cells cross to the Rh negative mother. The Rh negative mother’s immune system sees the baby's Rh positive red blood cells as foreign. Your immune system responds by making antibodies to fight and destroy these foreign cells. Your immune system stores these antibodies in case these foreign cells come back again. This can happen in a future pregnancy. You are now Rh sensitized. Rh sensitization normally isn't a problem with a first pregnancy. Most problems occur in future pregnancies with another Rh positive baby. During that pregnancy, the mother's antibodies cross the placenta to fight the Rh positive cells in the baby's body. As the antibodies destroy the cells, the baby gets sick. This is called erythroblastosis fetalis during pregnancy. Once the baby is born, it’s called HDN. Dr. Vikram Singh, a leading and experienced Neonatologist and Pediatrician in Delhi, NCR is known to handle newborn diseases and disorders efficiently, consult him online or in clinic by booking an appointment from the available slots.

Nutrition is especially important during pregnancy and infancy, which are crucial periods for the formation of the brain, laying the foundation for the development of cognitive, motor, and socio-emotional skills throughout childhood and adulthood. Correct feeding in the first three years of life is also important due to its role in lowering morbidity and mortality, reducing the risk of chronic disease throughout their life span, and promoting regular mental and physical development. Here, it is important to know that all babies are different and so are their needs. This means that babies can regulate the amount of nutrition they need by taking more or less milk, both human milk and infant formula. That is how they make sure they get the right amount of energy, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. Consult Dr. Vikram, leading Paediatric Nutritionist in Delhi, NCR, through online video call or in clinic by booking an appointment with icareheal.
